80年代のエピタフ？「この世に社会というものはない」

"I think we've been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it's the government's job to cope with it. 'I have a problem, I'll get a grant.' 'I'm homeless, the government must house me.' They're casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations. There's no such thing as entitlement, unless someone has first met an obligation."

あまりにも多くの人たちが「もし問題があるなら、それを片付けるのが政府の仕事だ」という理解をしてきたというのが今のこの時代だと思います。「俺には問題がある。だから給付金をもらう。」「俺はホームレスだ。だから政府に家をもらう。」皆が自分の問題を社会に投げつけるのです。しかし社会というものはありません。個人だけが、男と女だけが、家族だけが存在するのです。政府といってもそれは人々を通してしか何かをできないのであり、その人々はまずは自分を頼りにするのが先決なのです。自分自身の面倒、そして隣人の面倒を見ることが義務なのです。人々は責任を無視して権利ばかりたくさん主張します。ですが最初に義務を果たさなければ権利などというものはないのです。
