Some socialists seem to believe that people should be numbers in a state computer. We believe they should be individuals.

国民は政府のコンピューターの中の数字にすぎない、と信じている社会主義者がいる。われわれは数字でなく一人の人間のはずである。

We're all unequal. No one thank heavens is quite like anyone else however much the socialists may pretend otherwise and we believe that everyone has the right to be unequal. But to us every human being is equally important.

われわれはみな誰一人として同じではない。神様のおかげで、皆がみな異なる人間なのだ。社会主義者はそうでないと偽善的に言う。だがわれわれは他人と同じでなくていい権利をもつはずである。人間はみな同じでないが、同じように尊重されるべきなのだ。

A man's right to work as he will, to spend what he earns, to own property, to have the state as servant and not as master, they are the essence of a free economy. On that freedom all our other freedoms depend.

人は皆、自分が望むように働き、自分で所得したものを消費し、自分の財産を所有し、政府を主人でなく召し使いとする権利をもつ。それが自由経済のエッセンスであり、その自由の上にわれわれの他の自由もあるのだ。
